WASHINGTON – Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a Marine combat veteran, joined the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s CEO Steve Schwab for a conversation on his journey from the Marines to the U.S. Senate and the role of public policy in supporting caregivers of our nation’s veterans.
“There is something to be said about being at home, being comfortable at home,” said Senator Gallego. “It’s easier for your families and friends to visit you. You’re centered in your community, you have individualized care that understands you, which is why you see less […] medical mistakes happening.”
Gallego emphasized the importance of investing in programs that support veterans’ wellness, including preventive care for younger veterans, help veterans find housing, and expand mental health treatments.
Senator Gallego also criticized proposed staffing cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs and reiterated his commitment to fighting them.
“My biggest disagreement right now is with the proposed 83,000 cuts to the VA,” said Senator Gallego. “From my experience the VA, my experience working, trying to bring more services, I just need to be explained to, how is this not going to impact services. If you could explain it to me, you could show me that, yes, there’s a way for us to improve outcomes and not affect families and veterans, then I’m willing to work with you. […] I’m very afraid of this kind of arbitrary rush to cut people.”
Senator Gallego has consistently pushed back against the Trump Administration’s cuts to the VA that threaten essential services for veterans, including by placing a blanket hold on nominees to the department until it reverses course.
He also highlighted bipartisan momentum in Congress to improve care for veterans:
“I think, around caregiving and direct support to our veterans. I think there’s very bipartisan support there”
Over 14.5 million Americans are military and veteran caregivers. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation was founded in 2012 by former Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) and is dedicated to supporting these unsung heroes behind our nation’s service members and veterans.
