ARIZONA – Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) called on Kroger to reverse its recent decision to terminate a contract with its longtime transportation supplier, Ruan Transportation. The decision will result in roughly 130 truck drivers and mechanics being laid off in Tolleson, Arizona.

“I am concerned with your recent decision to terminate your longstanding relationship with Ruan Transportation, an action that puts good-paying jobs at risk and impacts community stability,” Senator Gallego wrote in a letter to Kroger CEO Ronald Sargent and President of Labor Relations Darin Torosian.

The affected workers are experienced drivers and long-time residents of the southwest valley who have played a key role in keeping Kroger’s supply chain resilient and reliable.

“Some employees who will be affected have worked at the distribution center for 26 years or more and are at ages when starting over in their careers will be difficult and daunting,” the Senator continued. “Terminating this contract puts their livelihoods at risk and jeopardizes Kroger’s reputation in the communities it serves.”

“I urge Kroger to return to the negotiating table with Ruan Transportation and the Teamsters, and to engage in good faith bargaining that prioritizes job security, workplace standards, and respect for organized labor. Arizona’s working families deserve nothing less,” the Senator concluded.

Last month, Senator Gallego demanded answers and accountability from Kroger CEO Ronald Sargent after a recent investigation found that discount tags in 14 states, including Arizona, had expired sale tags for which Kroger was charging more than the sale price at the time of checkout.
