“For 80 years in the Pacific, Stars and Stripes has told the stories of our troops and for our troops. Thousands of servicemembers around the world read it for the kind of stories that just isn’t covered elsewhere,” said Senator Gallego. “Now more than ever, it’s vital that we protect independent, trusted journalism for those who serve. This resolution honors Stars and Stripe’s legacy and the journalists who keep it alive.”
“Eighty years ago, as American service members fought across the front lines of Europe and the Pacific, Stars and Stripes began its mission in the Pacific to keep our troops informed and connected,” said Senator Sullivan. “Since then, this publication has remained a trusted source of news for our military, veterans, and their families, wherever duty calls. This resolution commemorates eight decades of service by Stars and Stripes in honoring the men and women in uniform, preserving our shared history, and strengthening the spirit of our military community.”
Stars and Stripes coverage in the Pacific began in Honolulu during World War II to provide an independent, uncensored source of news for U.S. service members fighting in the Pacific. Since then, it has continuously covered “news about the military, for the military” in every major U.S. conflict.
Today, Stars and Stripes remains one of the most trusted news sources for servicemembers and their families, reaching nearly 1.5 million readers each day.

In September 2020, Gallego joined a bipartisan letter urging the Department of Defense to reverse its decision to defund Stars and Stripes, and in 2021 he helped secure $15.5 million in funding to ensure its continued operations.
