WASHINGTON – As antisemitic incidents continue to rise across the United States,Senator Gallego (D-AZ) backed two pieces of legislation to combat this growing trend and support Jewish communities.
“Right now, Jewish communities across the country are facing real threats. Antisemitic incidents in the U.S. have skyrocketed in recent years, and they’re becoming deadlier. That’s why I’m supporting this legislation to condemn this violence and make it clear that antisemitism has no place in Arizona, in our country, or anywhere in the world,” said Senator Gallego.
The Holocaust Education and Antisemitism Lessons (HEAL) Act would strengthen Holocaust education at public schools and increase awareness of Holocaust educational resources available to local communities. This bipartisan bill directs the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to conduct a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive study on Holocaust education to help improve the ways in which educators teach students across the country about the Holocaust and antisemitism.
Senator Gallego also backed a bipartisan resolution acknowledging the growing trend of political violence targeting Jewish people and condemning recent antisemitic attacks, including the Boulder supermarket attack, the murder of Israeli Embassy staffers outside the Capital Jewish Museum, and the arson attack on Governor Josh Shapiro’s home following Passover.
Senator Gallego has consistently fought to protect Jewish communities. He backed the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which directs the Department of Education to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism when investigating acts of discrimination on campus. In the House, Gallego fought to restore supplemental funding for the Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which helps fund security measures at nonprofits at high risk of a terrorist attack, including synagogues and other institutions in the Jewish community.
