‘You’re Plundering U.S. Taxpayer Dollars,” Gallego tells Treasury Secretary Bessent
WASHINGTON – Today, during a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) grilled Department of Treasury Secretary – who is also serving as Acting Director of the IRS – Scott Bessent on his conflicts of interest in Trump’s lawsuits against his own federal government.

Watch Senator Gallego’s questioning HERE.
Senator Gallego questioned Secretary Bessent about President Trump’s lawsuit seeking $10 billion from the IRS. During the exchange, Bessent admitted that if Trump were to win or settle the lawsuit, U.S. taxpayers would foot the bill.
GALLEGO: So, you are fully aware that the President is suing your agency for $10 billion?
BESSENT: Yes.
GALLEGO: Would you agree that $10 billion is a good sum of money?
BESSENT: Yes, sir.
GALLEGO: What would that be cut from? Let’s say for some reason he actually wins that lawsuit, where would that $10 billion come from?
…
BESSENT: The Treasury general account.
GALLEGO: So, taxpayers?
BESSENT: Yes.
Senator Gallego ended his questioning by making it clear that the Administration’s and Secretary Bessent’s conflicts of interest are at the expense of hardworking Americans.
“You’re the person who hits send on the wire transfer … You’re plundering U.S. taxpayer dollars,” Senator Gallego concluded.
