In 2024, Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego provided a rare bright spot for a party that seems to have lost its way. He performed where his peers did not—winning statewide in Arizona (which Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump) on the strength of support from Latino men, who swung toward Trump significantly nationwide. In the process, Gallego—a 45-year-old former Marine and father of three who was raised by an immigrant single mother—became a strong voice in the debate over where the Democrats should go from here.

Since arriving in the Senate, Gallego has outlined a blueprint for winning back Latino voters by focusing on the economy. He has taken a more hard-line approach to immigration than some of his fellow Democrats, introducing a plan that includes beefing up security at the border while also creating a path to citizenship. He’s even made buzzy visits to early primary states, stoking speculation about a possible future presidential run.
