WASHINGTON – During National Police Week, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), a Marine Corps combat veteran, recommitted his efforts to support Arizona’s law enforcement officers and honor the brave officers tragically killed in the line of duty.
“This National Police Week, we honor the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. They’ve always had our backs, and I’m proud to have theirs. That’s why I’m working to give law enforcement the tools and support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Senator Gallego.
Yesterday, Senator Gallego proudly supported a resolution recognizing National Police Week, which for more than six decades, paid special tribute to the service and sacrifice of courageous officers and their families, especially our nation’s fallen heroes. In 2024, 234 police officers were killed in the line of duty, including four in Arizona.
Senator Gallego is a long-time law enforcement advocate. This Congress, he led the bipartisan Bridging Agency Data Gaps & Ensuring Safety (BADGES) for Native Communities Actto support the recruitment and retention of Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) law enforcement officers and the bipartisan Innovate to De-Escalate Modernization Actto make it easier for police departments, especially smaller ones, to access less-than-lethal technology.
He also backed the Invest to Protect Act of 2025 to help small and mid-sized police departments, including Tribal police departments, recruit and provide safety training, de-escalation training, and mental health support for their officers. Gallego previously supported the legislation in the 117th Congress. As a member of the House, Gallego also fought for Social Security expansion for police offers through the Social Security Fairness Act, which went into effect in February.
